Nature of request
The abbot and convent of St Augustine of Bristol request that whereas on 10 April last Canynges and certain commons of Bristol riotously assembled and broke their mills at Trivel Mills, took away timber and placed planks across the watercourse there claiming a ferry and common passage for the town without title or reasonable cause, and on 15 April they imprisoned various servants and tenants of the abbot residing in the mills and surrounding area accusing them of preventing the mayor and commons of Bristol from their said right of way and ferry, and they have seized, imprisoned and threatened in life and limb canons and servants of the abbot, Holcote and others, that he grant a special commission to Baron Berkeley, Berkeley and Rodinay to enquire into this matter and others in Somerset.
