Reference
SC 8/245/12205
Date
[1326]
Description
Petitioners
People of Canterbury.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
They request that the king array the town in another manner and to take certain of the prominent of the country and town that they ordain in such a manner for the keeping and punishment of the malefactors who have disturbed the city so that they answer to the king, and that they use a commission to do this.
Nature of endorsement
It seems well that it is commanded to the arrayers of those parts that they array the people of city as elsewhere within their bailiwick so that men are able to know which people they are, . . . and the sheriff and other sufficient people of the country be assigned with the bailiffs to enquire in their behaviour and aid in their punishment, and if necessary that the king be certified so that he can ordain etc.
Places mentioned
Canterbury, [Kent].
Note
The petition is dated to 1326 as a note on the guards of the petition and the privy seal warrant - C 81/131/7302 - show that this was enclosed with that warrant, though the warrant seems to have little apparent relevance to this petition.
