Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/244/12157
Date
[? 1347]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas de Blakeneye (Blakeney), mariner and merchant of London.
Name(s)
de Blakeneye (Blakeney), Thomas
Addressees
King.
Occupation
mariner and merchant of London
Nature of request
Blakeneye requests a new writ to the sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk to arrest the goods and chattels of the people of France as he had an earlier writ which he left with his wife who destroyed it believing him dead at the battle of Sluis. The then sheriff has verified that no such arrest was delivered to him.
Nature of endorsement
Let her be brought into Chancery.
Places mentioned
France
Sluis, [Netherlands]
Flanders.
People mentioned
Robert de Causton, sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1341 as it seems likely that the petition is shortly after the battle of Sluis of 1340, and after the period of Robert de Causton's tenure of the office of sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk which ended in February 1341. The date '21 Edw. 3.' stamped on the guard seems too late. The close roll references, though closely related do not specifically relate to this petition and date to the period 1338-1344 (CCR 1337-9, pp.455-6; CCR 1343-6, p.466).
