Reference
SC 8/242/12061
Date
[? 1334]
Description
Petitioners
John de Grauntsete.
Name(s)
de Grauntsete, John
Addressees
King.
Places mentioned
Leixlip, [County Kildare, Ireland].
Nature of request
Grauntsete requests remedy as he holds by commission for a term of years from the king the manor of Leixlip rendering the extent at the Exchequer of Dublin, however, the free tenants of the manor who contribute to the extent are so impoverished by the war that they cannot work the land or pay the rent, but the treasurer and barons of the Dublin Exchequer will have no regard for this and demand the full extent.
Nature of endorsement
Let the justice be commanded to enquire of this and certify the king.
Note
The petition apparently dates to 1334 as the date '8 Edw. 3.' is stamped on the guard and an entry in the close rolls refers to the restoration of the manor to the petitioner (CCR 1333-7, p.256). However this close roll reference does not seem to tally with the request contained in the petition and the Chancery Warrant is similarly doubtful (C 81/215/7964). The privy seal warrant with which this petition was apparently formerly enclosed dates to 14 July 1334 [8 Edw. III] (C 81/215/7964).
