Nature of request
The people of the commonalty request that by writs to the archbishop of York that he command the delivery of Clayton, slave of St John, and he re-enjoy the liberty there and to reside there peacefully. Clayton took sanctuary in the liberty of St John at Beverley for the death of Elmesale until the slaves of the liberty by the king's commandment went to Berwick and the war until they were pardoned. Clayton was attacked by his enemies and is imprisoned in York.
