Description

Seven sheets of drawings of proposed fortifications for St John's, Lower Canada, originally made to accompany report and estimate dated 11 January 1840 submitted by Lieutenant Colonel J Oldfield, Commanding Royal Engineer in the Canadas. (59) Sections through ABC, ZW and XYTV, relating to plate 1 [ie item (63) below]. Scales: ABC: 1 inch to 40 feet; ZW and XYTV vertical scale: 1 inch to 50 feet and horizontal scale: 1 inch to 100 feet. Drawn by Lieutenant H A White, Royal Engineers, 14 January 1840. (60) 'Tower proposed to be erected in the North West Bastion of the Fort ...': plans, section and elevation. Scale: 1 inch to 8 feet [1:96]. Drawn by Lieutenant A H Freeling, Royal Engineers, 31 December 1839. (61) Plan and section of the bridge leading to the Fort at St John's; with enlarged section of drawbridge lowering mechanism. Scales: plan and section 1 inch to 10 feet; enlarged section 1 inch to 2 feet. Signed by T Hounslow, Temporary Foreman of Works. (62) No 1: plan showing the proposed defences at the fort and Tête de Pont. Scale: 1 inch to 150 yards [1:5,400]. Compass indicator. Certified a true copy: signed by P J Bainbrigge, Lieutenant Royal Engineers, 20 December 1839. (63) No 2: 'Pl. [plate] 1': plan showing the proposed improvements to the fort. Scale: 1 inch to 120 feet [1:1,440]. (Signed) Lieutenant A H Freeling, Royal Engineers, 21 December 1839. Certified a true copy: signed by Bainbrigge. (64) No 3: plan and sections of the proposed river-front fortifications; with enlarged plan and section of a gun traversing platform. Scales: fort: 1 inch to 120 feet [1:1,440]; gun platform: 1 inch to 4 feet [1:48]. Compass indicator. Signed by Major [?P Cole], Royal Engineers, District Officer, 9 January 1840.
