Description

7 items (originally accompanying copies of reports dated 10 June 1841) extracted from WO 55/1562/2. Palestine and the Levant coast. Seven maps of towns and cities. (4) 'Reconnaissance of Gaza of the villages of Harrat It Te Fear and Sejaeah ...': showing mosques, barracks, a well, a chapel, graves and roads leading out of Gaza (now in the Occupied Territories). (5) 'Plan of Jaffa' [now Yafo, Israel]: showing roads to Gaza, Acre (now Akko), and Ramla and the fortress. (6) 'Plan of the Town and Environs of Jerusalem': map showing roads leading from the town, Siloam village, mountains, the castle, tombs etc. (7) 'Plan of Defences of the town of Kaiffa' [now Haifa, Israel]: map showing the road from Acre through Haifa to Mount Carmel and Jaffa. (8) Showing the defences of Acre (now Akko, Israel) town and harbour. (9) 'Plan of the Town and Defences of Sidon' [now Saida, Lebanon]: showing the upper and lower castles, and the road to Beirut. (10) 'Sketch of Beyrout [now Beirut, Lebanon] and its vicinity': shows roads leading to and from the town, camps, gates and burial grounds. Reference tables and notes to items (4, 6, 9). Scale: (4) 1 inch to 200 yards [1:7,200]; (5) 1 inch to 300 feet [1:3,600]; (6, 10) 1 inch to 400 feet [1:4,800]; (7) 1 inch to 60 yards [1:2,160]; (8-9) 1 inch to 200 feet [1:2,400]. Compass indicators to items (4, 6-10). Items (4-8) and (10) (signed): Lieutenant Edward Aldric; item (9) (signed): Lieutenant J F A Symonds; all items further (signed): Colonel R C Alderson, June 1841. All items printed at the Lithographic Establishment, Quartermaster General's Office, August 1841.
