Sudan. (4) Two plans on a single sheet of (i) the country at the junction of the rivers Atbara and Nile, showing the main towns on the River Nile from 'Gineinetti' to 'Matemma', and from Atbara Fort to 'Adarama' on the River Atbara; and (ii) the direction of the night march of 7-8 April 1898 from 'Umdabia' to 'Nakheila'. (5) Plan of 'Mahmud Zariba' near 'Nakheila' showing the positions of the troops at the 'Battle of the Atbara'. The nature of the terrain is also shown. Reference (4) notes and (5) table. Scales: (4) i 1 inch to 10 miles; (4) ii 1 inch to 2640 yards; (5) 1 inch to 300 yards. Compass indicators. Drawn by Captain Rawlinson from a reconnaissance taken 6 April 1898 by Lieutenant N M Smyth, Queen's Bays Staff Officer Intelligence. Originally accompanying a report dated 10 April 1898 from Major General Sir H Kitchener to Major General Sir Francis Grenfell, Commanding the forces in Egypt. The three plans were subsequently printed on one sheet at the Ordnance Survey Office 1898 as IDWO 1340. Dimensions of sheets: (4) 45 cm x 31 cm; (5) 45 cm x 45.5 cm.
