Description

South-west Asia. Russian Empire; Ottoman Empire. Three maps of an area between the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov and the Caspian Sea illustrating (1) government and military districts; (2) population; and (3) geological formations. Lithographed at the Quarter Master General's Department October 1876. Prepared for Lord Salisbury 1876-1877 and originally illustrating a War Office paper on the theatre of war in Asiatic Turkey and Transcaucasia. Annotated (2) 'This map is compiled from Baron Max von Thielman's Notice on the population of the Caucasus, checked by reference to other Authors' and (3) 'Enlarged from that by Sir Roderick Murchison. Trustworthy for General Features but not for details'.
