1798-1914
This series consists mainly of an enumeration of all occupiers and owners of property in England and Wales subject to Land Tax, prepared as a consequence of the Act 38 Geo. III, c. 60.
The information given in the records comprises the name of occupier, name of proprietor (if not the same), amount assessed and date of redemption (where applicable), and the arrangement being by Land Tax parishes within counties. No details of the properties are given. The series also contains papers relating to the appeals of Roman Catholics against the 'Double Rate' Assessment imposed by 4 William and Mary, c. 1, and a selection of returns and quotas of later Land Tax assessments up to 1914.
The dates shown in the Covering Dates field are the dates of the Act under which these assessments were made. For most pieces in this series, this is 1798, but some items include assessments for 1799 and 1800. These anamolies are indicated in the individual item-level Scope and Contents.
