Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of Shrewsbury state that their founder, Earl Roger of Belleme, who came over with the Conqueror, granted them a fair at Lammas [I August] to last for three days, and that this was confirmed by William the Conqueror and has been by every king since. Now the burgesses of Shrewsbury are claiming a fair for three days at the feast St James (25 July), to ruin the monks' fair, and in support of this they have produced a charter which, however, they will not allow anyone to read. The monks request a remedy.
