Nature of request
The Abbot elect of St Albans requests the King's grace on seven matters:1) He requests the King's letters to the Pope to put the confirmation of his election into effect, after he has received that confirmation at court.2) He requests the King's letters to the cardinals to expedite this business.3) He requests letters of permission to go overseas with two monks of St Albans and his people, and that no other monk of St Albans or its cells might pass without the King's special permission.4) He asks that when, with the aid of God, he has been advanced, the King might give permission to the Treasurer to advance him if he is abroad.5) He asks the King to assign the keeping of the gate of St Albans to Thomas Broun, servant (sergeaunt) of the Abbey of St Albans, to keep in the King's name, provided that he does not have charge of guests until the Abbey has re-established itself.6) He requests letters to the Prior of St Albans, asking him to receive whatever monk the Abbot assigns to his company, to guard and watch over everything concerning the Abbey, with the aid and counsel of the steward, until his return.7) He states that the King gave him his commission to survey his manors and the manors of the Templars on this side of the Trent, and asks to be absolved of the manors of the Templars, so that he might survey his own manors only, because he has told the Pope that he has been in the King's service. And he requests his letters attesting this.
