Nature of request
Petition from the Abbot and convent of Reading, quoting an earlier petition presented to the King at Bury St Edmunds, asking the King to confirm their charters, allowing them to sue all the articles in these charters whether they had used them in the past or not, and clarifying what was declared in them in general terms; and that the King granted this petition, stating that all general words in their charters would be clarified in their most generous sense, saving the royal dignity. They show how certain liberties expressed in general words in their charters have been interpreted in the past, and ask that they may be clarified in this way.
