Nature of request
The Abbot of Tavistock states that he was appointed Abbot by the Pope, because of the dissension between two candidates chosen by the house, who had appealed to the court of Rome, and that he has bulls from the Pope similar to those used in similar cases; but that the clerks of Chancery objected to certain words in these bulls, which they said were prejudicial to the King, and made him renounce them before a notary and told him to put himself on the King's grace for 500 marks - telling him that other Bishops and Abbots in like case had done this, but promising him that he would not have to pay anything. But this sum is now demanded from him by a summons of the Exchequer, together with 50 marks for Queen Philippa's gold - which last sum alone would be the ruin of his house. He asks to be discharged of this sum, of the King's grace, as he and his ancestors have never received any money from anyone in such a case.
