Description
Petitioners
John Darcy the cousin.
Name(s)
Darcy, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
John Darcy the kinsman states that when Edward II separated him from his lord, the Earl of Pembroke, and made him Justiciar of Ireland, he promised him 200 marks worth of land to support his estate; but gave him only the manors of Edgefield and Walcott in Norfolk, which belonged to Thomas Rocelyn. Thomas took them back on pretext of the cause when the King came to England, and is now demanding the issues from the time when John held them. He asks that he might be discharged of these. And then after the King's coronation he petitioned parliament, and was given various manors and wardships; and was then retained in the King's service for life and given other manors. He asks that these might be confirmed, or that he might have their value in some suitable place.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege. This petition is to be sent before the prelates, earls and barons who have been appointed to oversee the gifts made by the King, and they are to advise the King. And it seems to the council that the King should give him compensation for the land from which he was expelled elsewhere to the same value. And with regard to the issues that Thomas Rocelyn demands from him, the King should speak to Thomas so that John is discharged.
