Description
Petitioners
Chaplains of the chapel of Our Lady in Windsor park.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The chaplains of the chapel of Our Lady in Windsor park state that Edward II set up a chantry in their chapel of thirteen chaplains and four clerks, and arranged for an income for them from the manors of Langley Marish and Cippenham. But now there are only four chaplains and Thomas de Housflet, their new Dean and Warden, as some have died and some abandoned their posts because of non-payment of their wages, which have long been in arrears because the manors have been in the hands of Queen Isabella; although their wages are now fully paid in the Exchequer. Now they have been ordered to leave the chapel and move to Windsor castle, contrary to their charter. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege. This petition is to be sent into Chancery, and the Chancellor, having seen the ordinance, is to further inform the King; and he is to speak his will on the matter. And with regard to their wages, they are to be served either in the Exchequer or in some other manner, according to what will be most to the King's profit and their ease.
