Nature of request
The Dean and canons of the King's free chapel of Hastings state that for lack of enclosure they have been robbed and beaten, and animals defile their graveyard, and that they are also in danger from the sea. They request permission to enclose the castle, and to provide it with secure doors, walls and other suitable defences, and have their workshops and stores inside it, and that they might have the keeping of the castle in time of peace. They also request the herbages belonging to the castle within and without, in the town of Hastings. And they ask for an inquisition into the truth of what they say.
