Nature of request
John de Thinden, clerk, states that he was appointed by the King to repair the castle of Newcastle upon Tyne, and that he has worked for more than two and a half years on this, and made many improvements, which he lists. He asks that he might account for these works, and that he might be paid for his expenses on them and his wages. He also requests an ordinance on how this castle and its new buildings might best be kept. He also states that work is still needed on the high tower of the castle, and on the gates and drawbridges, and asks that the King might write with his will on this to the Chancellor and Treasurer and the other members of the council in England. And he asks that the Chancellor might send a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to account with him, and to give him an allowance for his wages and those of his workmen, on the testimony of the Mayor and Bailiffs of Newcastle.
