Date
[1371-1373]
Description
Petitioners
William de Fulmere, vicar of Ecclesfield.
Name(s)
de Fulmere, William
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
vicar of Ecclesfield
Nature of request
William de Fulmere states that the vicar of the church of Ecclesfield is presented by the Abbot and convent of St Wandrille in Normandy, but that after the death of Robert Gwillelmy, vicar of Ecclesfield, who died after the temporalities of the abbey had been taken into the King's hand, one brother John Burdyt intruded himself into the church, without presentation or institution. The Archbishop of York asked the council for a remedy, and the Bishop of Winchester, then Chancellor, presented William to the office in the King's right. He was instituted and inducted, and in peaceful possession for sixteen months and more, until the Chancellor repealed the presentation because of a false claim by John Burdyt, proctor of the Abbot of St Wandrille and farmer of the priory of Ecclesfield that the vicarage made up part of his farm and that he could not pay it without it, and presented John. He has also issued a commission to arrest William and his supporters, as a result of which William was imprisoned for several days, and does not dare to pursue his right in the King's court or in court Christian. He asks that justice and reason might be done to him in the matter of this wrong.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Ecclesfield, [West Riding of Yorkshire]
St Wandrille (Fontenelle), Normandy, [France].
People mentioned
John [Thoresby], Archbishop of York
Abbot and convent of St Wandrille
William de Grenefeld (Greenfield), Archbishop of York
Robert Gwillelmy, vicar of Ecclesfield
John Burdyt (Burdet), proctor of the Abbot of St Wandrille, farmer of the priory of Ecclesfield
[William Wykeham], Bishop of Winchester, Chancellor of England.
Note
Dated to 1371-1372, with reference to the date of 45 Edward III on the guard, or to 1373, with reference to CCR 1369-74 p.594, which is dated 30 October 1373. It is probably no later, as it seems to imply that John Thoresby, who died in November 1373, is still Archbishop of York. On the other hand, it must date from after March 1371, as it speaks of William Wykeham as the former Chancellor.
