Nature of request
William de Whithurst states that William de Holyns was appointed by the King's father in the twentieth year of his reign to pay the wages at Gloucester of men coming to the late King's aid in the pursuit of Hugh le Despenser and other rebels, and that he was given £100 by the King to do so; but that the present King and the Queen his mother took the remainder of this money when they came to Gloucester, and the Queen gave him an acquittance for it. He was later appointed to guard the jewels, goods and chattels belonging to the Earl of Kent found in Arundel Castle, and delivered them to the Countess of Kent at the King's command. William de Whithurst is the tenant of William de Holyns' lands, and is distrained to render account for these sums. He asks to be pardoned this account, as he can produce no documents concerning the payment of wages (although he can show other documents), and also to be pardoned any issues forfeited to the King because the account has not yet been rendered.
