Date

Description
Petitioners
William Bateman, Bishop of Norwich.
Name(s)
Bateman, William
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Bishop of Norwich
Nature of request
William, Bishop of Norwich, states that he and his predecessors were seized of view of frankpledge and a husting in the town of Bishop's Lynn, but that because of a false suggestion made by certain people of Lynn that John de Ely, his predecessor, acquired these from the mayor and community of Lynn without permission from the King, a commission was issued to inquire into this, which was held on St Laurence's day last in circumstances which were prejudicial to the Bishop in various ways. As a result of this inquiry, the liberties were taken into the King's hand, and delivered to the people of Lynn. He asks that they might be restored to him, and he will be ready to answer to the King and to show his right when it pleases the King.
Nature of endorsement
If the Bishop's franchises have been taken into the King's hand by virtue of such a commission and inquisition as the petition says, and not for any other reason, because it is against the law of the land that a person should be expelled from possession of his franchises without response, the Bishop is to have restitution of these franchises, saving the King's right; provided always that the said Bishop answers to the King for the aforesaid franchises in the place where he should, according to the law.
