Description

Occupation
Abbot of Titchfield
Nature of request
The Abbot of Titchfield states that he and his predecessors hold the hamlet of Cadland, which is in Hampshire outside the Isle of Wight, in pure and perpetual alms, of the gift and feoffment of Eve de Clinton, who held it in chief of Reginald Daumarle, ancestor of Isabel de Forz, formerly Lady of the Isle of Wight, whose estate the King now has, and that Reginald released all manner of services due to him to them, and the King's progenitors confirmed this release. The tenants of Cadland used to be taxed with the vill of Bowcombe in West Medina hundred, which is in the King's hand, but now the collectors for the body of the county have assessed and levied their portion separately, and nevertheless the bailiffs of West Medina, by colour of a writ of Chancery, distrain the Abbot and his tenants of Cadland for their portion of the fifteenth, and for services which they claim were due to Isabel de Forz, but which the Abbot's predecessors never did. He requests a remedy, and that the truth might be inquired into.
