Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Westminster.
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Abbot of Westminster
Nature of request
The Abbot of Westminster states that King Edward, the King's grandfather, granted him various manors charged with certain alms for the soul of Queen Eleanor, and that his charter for these manors expressly states that it was the King's intention that the Abbot and his successors should not be charged with any other charge on these manors, and that the present King has granted by his letters patent that he should be quit of tenths, fifteenths and other aids arising from them. Nevertheless, because aids charged on each knight's fee are not specifically mentioned, the collectors of the aid from each knight's fee to knight the King's son are demanding that he pay. He asks that he might be discharged of this, and of all other aids granted since the making of these letters patent.
Nature of endorsement
It pleases the King that the charter from his grandfather's time and the letters patent from his own time, mentioned by this petition, should be examined; and if they are such as the petition claims, then the Abbot and convent of Westminster are to be discharged of the aid demanded of them to knight the King's eldest son as regards the manors contained in the aforesaid charter.
