- John Legat of Langley states that on the Monday after the feast of St Martin in the King's fifteenth year, a large number of armed malefactors, at the command of Emma, mother of Edmund de Oddynggeseles, came by night to Ickleford, broke into his house, seized his servants so that they did not dare to make a noise, attacked and threatened him, forced him to make fine with them and carried off his valuables. Edmund also assembles crowds of malefactors at fairs and markets, menacing the people, and they commit homicides, robberies, breaking of parks and other crimes, so that the country is as if at war. He also claims that he is of the King's chamber, and that the King will pardon him all manner of felonies and trespasses whenever he wants, so that everyone is afraid of him; and, although William Corbet, the new husband of Emma de Oddynggeseles, and others have been given a commission to arrest him and the others, they have not done so, because of the maintenance of William Corbet and Emma. William, Emma, Edmund and the others are continuing to threaten John and Margery his wife, so that they have left their home and are renting houses in Baldock for Margery and the children. William and Emma are also distraining John without reason by his plough-oxen and other livestock, so that he cannot cultivate his land in Ickleford. He requests a remedy.
