Description
Petitioners
Peter (Peir) de Seint Johan (St John), merchant of Bayonne.
Name(s)
de Seint Johan (St John), Peter (Peir)
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
merchant of Bayonne
Nature of request
Peter de Seint Johan states that he has sued to the King and council for three years to have compensation for a robbery committed against him at sea in the port of Dartmouth, on Trinity Sunday five years ago, by John Badding, Roger Kildar, and other malefactors of Winchelsea, and that although the King has often written to the Earl of Huntingdon, Constable of Dover and Warden of the Cinque Ports, asking him to give Peter justice and to imprison the malefactors in Dover castle and seize their goods until Peter was compensated, nothing has been done, and the malefactors are free on mainprise. The King lately ordered him again at London, but as soon as he left the city, the Bailiff of Winchelsea and John Seman, one of the mainpernors, sued a writ to the Constable to abandon the business. He requests a letter under the privy seal to the Constable to imprison the malefactors and their mainpernors in Dover castle, and to take their goods into the King's hand, and to take the franchises of Winchelsea into the King's hand for disobedience, until satisfaction has been made to him.

Note
From notes on the guard, this petition was formerly enclosed with no.14466 of C 81/280, dated 4 December 15 Edward III (1341). SC 8/238/11892B, which is dated 30 September, 16 Edward III (1342), seems to have been added to the collection later and not to be directly related. No.15010 of C 81/286, also in response to a petition where the petitioner says that he has sued for three years, is dated 27 September 16 Edward III.
