Note
Apparently the charter mentioned in SC 8/238/11890A, but not enclosed with it. From the hand, probably of a similar period, and possibly produced in support of this petition. A copy of this charter appears on the patent roll with a slightly later confirmation (24 October 1346), and is repeated in 'Early Yorkshire Charters', vol. I, p.263, where it is dated to 1163. The latter tentatively identifies 'Kirkeby' as Kirkbymoorside, but this cannot be confirmed. Both transcripts give the place of composition as Pickering rather than 'Lithervile'; presumably one is a transcription error, but which is unknown. Eyton's itinerary of Henry II places the king in southern England for most of 1163, and the charter is dated by Vincent, Henry II, to 1155-1166, and probably to 1163.
