Nature of request
The weavers of York state that Henry II granted to them by his charter that no-one in the county of Yorkshire should make striped or coloured cloth, except in York and certain other places of the King's demesne, and that for this they pay a certain sum. But the present King has granted to weavers from Brabant and other aliens living in York and in other places in the county that they shall be free of taxes and tallages, and other denizen weavers are also working in various places in the county, contrary to the charter: with the result that the petitioners are so poor that they cannot pay their farm. They ask that the franchise granted to the aliens might be repealed, and that a writ of fieri facias might be issued to all the weavers in the county by a new charter whenever their farm is in arrears, or that they might be discharged of their farm.
