Nature of request
Hugh de Lacy states that he used to hold the castles of Athlone and Rindoon for Edward II, but that since he was exiled from Ireland by Roger de Mortimer through greed for his lands, the king has received nothing from these castles, which are ruined and in the hands of his enemies. He asks the King to grant him his peace by charter, and promises to perform for the King the services that he did before, including the keeping of these castles. He also asks that the Justiciar might be ordered to inquire into the circumstances of his exile, and that, if it is found to be wrongful, his lands might be returned to him, to answer for the extent at the Exchequer.
