[c. 1300]
Description
Petitioners
Community of Bayonne.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The community of Bayonne make eight requests:1) They ask the King to confirm their privileges, liberties, laws and customs in woods, waters, groves etc., and to give them grace of toll in the Landes, as this was granted during time of war.2) They request a certain tower at the head of the street to the main bridge, to house citizens imprisoned for debt by the Mayor and jurats of Bayonne.3) They ask the King to confirm all statutes promulgated and to be promulgated by the Mayor, jurats and hundred peers of Bayonne, with the consent of the community, for his benefit and that of the community, to prevent those who would be injured by them obstructing them.4) They state that the Friars Preachers and Friars Minor of Bayonne have built and intend to build certain buildings over the common rivers of Bayonne, which will be very dangerous for the other citizens because of the narrowing of these rivers, and ask the King to write to them ordering them to remove these buildings.5) They state that the city has incurred great expenses through the King's service and the city's needs, and ask that a charge might be made on certain goods of the citizens and of strangers coming to the city, especially as they wish to repair the city's defences.6) They ask for a fair.7) They ask that the citizens whom the Mayor wishes to imprison in Bayonne castle for a certain forfeiture should not pay torragium, because this is a recent thing imposed by foreign mayors, and because it was decided that the time of the building of the castle that, because of the service given by the citizens to this building, none of them should pay torragium.8) They ask that the boatyards in their city might be preserved to them as the Friars Preachers have appropriated them, apparently with the King's permission, and are selling them to lay people to build houses on.
Nature of endorsement
These petitions are to be sent to the Constable of Bordeaux, who will inquire and search for the truth on this matter, and inform the King at the quinzaine of Michalemas next. And the King will answer them.
Places mentioned
Bayonne, [Gascony, France]
Landes, [Gascony, France].
People mentioned
Friars Preachers (Dominicans) of Bayonne
Friars Minor (Franciscans) of Bayonne.
Note
The mention of war in the first petition would suggest a date after the 1294-98 Anglo-French war, and the petition may be connected with the treaty of 1303. In any case, the hand and language would seem to suggest a date of c. 1300.
