Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Bury St Edmunds.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of Bury St Edmunds make two requests:1) They state that by the charters of the King's progenitors they have had the franchise that no secular person or minister of the King should interfere in the borough of Bury St Edmunds or with its inhabitants, or hold any pleas there, but that some of the King's ministers are disputing this. They ask that there might be an inquiry into whether they have had and used this franchise, and that this might be clarified in their charters.2) They state that they have had chattels of felons and fugitives, year and waste, an all other forfeitures from their tenants, as can be seen from records of various allowances made in the Exchequer. They ask the King to grant by his charter that they might have these chattels, year, waste and forfeitures, without being challenged in Eyre.
Nature of endorsement
A writ is to be issued to inquire into the contents of this petition, and when the inquisition has been returned the King will speak his will on the matter.
Places mentioned
Bury St Edmunds, [Suffolk].
Note
Documents issued in response to this petition are dated 4 March, 19 Edward II (1326) (SC 8/234/11698) and 6 March, 19 Edward II (SC 8/234/11694, SC 8/234/11695 and SC 8/234/11696). The petition must therefore date from 1326.
