Nature of request
Maud, widow of Hugh de Preston, states that Nicholas de la Fisshepole granted her the reversion of all his lands and tenements in Moreton Jeffreys after the term of nine years. This term was completed at the last feast of the Purification, but, because the termer was a contrariant, his lands and tenements were seized into the King's hand. She requests a remedy, and that she might be able to hold the lands at farm while there is an inquiry into the truth.
Nature of endorsement
She is to show what evidence she has for the lease in Chancery, and there is also to be an inquisition into Nicholas' estate; and the King is to be informed of the cause of the seizure, and justice done in Chancery.[A further endorsement can be found on the dorse of SC 8/234/11667] This inquisition was returned and examined before the council. It was answered thus:If Edmund Haclut is outside prison and the tenements are in his hand, she is to sue at common law.If Edmund is in the King's prison and the tenements in the King's hand, she is to wait for Edmund's release.
