Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/232/11555
Date
[1416]
Description
Petitioners
Margerie Lescrope (Scrope), widow of Stephen le Scrope, lord Scrope of Masham.
Name(s)
Lescrope (Scrope), Margerie
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Lescrope requests remedy as her son granted her the manor of Nayland with appurtenances in Essex and Suffolk, with other lands in Stoke, Horkesley and Colchester for her life, and she, by a fine, leased it back to him for 40 years, the term determining on his death. Now the manor and land are in the king's hand by the forfeiture and execution of her son, though he only had a life interest in the manor and land.
Places mentioned
Nayland, Suffolk
Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk
Horkesley, Essex
Colchester, Essex.
People mentioned
Stephen Lescrope (Scrope), lord Scrope of Masham, late husband of the petitioner
Henry Lescrope (Scrope), lord of Masham, knight, late son of the petitioner.
Note
The petition is dated to 1416 as other petitions in preceding files from Chancery Files 548 date to this year. The reference to her late son, Henry Scrope confirms this dating, as he was executed for complicity in the Southampton plot against Henry V in August 1415 (Complete Peerage, vol. XI, pp.564-6).
