Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/231/11543
Date
[1403-1404]
Description
Petitioners
John Whaplode, widow of John Whaplode.
Name(s)
Whaplode, John
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Whaplode requests that the chancellor and justices be commanded to do to her as the common law demands, as she has been delayed in her suit for a year and a half. She states that she was seised of various tenements in London until the King's second year, when they were expelled by Marchall, Crosby and Bradwas, by colour of the King's letters patent granted to them. They have long sued to have a scire facias on this matter, but cannot, as Joan Jordan, formerly possessor of these tenements is claimed to have been a lifelong idiot, although this is not true.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
London
Seinte Margarete de Briggestrete (St Margaret, New Fish Street), London.
People mentioned
John Whaplode, citizen of London and late husband of the petitioner
John Marchall (Marshall)
Agnes Crosby
Thomas Bradwas
Joan Jordan.
Note
SC 8/148/7354 makes it clear that the related SC 8/117/5823 (together with SC 8/117/5822) was presented to the parliament of 5 Henry IV (January 1404). The petitioner was disseised of her tenements by grants of 4 May 1401 and 11 July 1401 (CPR 1399-1401 p.514 and p.525). If SC 8/148/7354 was presented at the only parliament between 1401 and 1404, that of September 1402, then this petition must be very close in date. This would also accord reasonably well with her claim to have been kept out of her tenements for a year and a half. As the petition is from Chancery Files 528 it must date to 1403-1404 based on the dating of other petitions that have derived from this Chancery file.
