Reference
SC 8/231/11518
Date
[? 1395-? 1422]
Description
Petitioners
Margaret Golye, widow of Edmund Golye of Taunton.
Name(s)
Golye, Margaret
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Golye requests letters to Lopynford commanding him to deliver to her all her charters, evidences and muniments, and all the lands and tenements of her inheritance which he still wrongly detains from her, and that he be summoned before the king on a certain day to show the reason for his actions. He took Golye's charters from Ladde, in whose keeping she had placed them and has sold some of her land and detains the remainder, and he is of such power that she cannot sue for them without the king's aid.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Taunton, Somerset
Honiton, [Deveon].
People mentioned
Edmund Golye of Taunton, late husband of the petitioner
John Lopynford of Honiton, man of law
Ellis Ladde.
Note
The petition is speculatively dated to? 1395-? 1422 on the basis of the hand. The guard note suggests a possible date of 1410, but this is based on a totally unrelated reference to John Lopynford in the patent rolls (CPR 1408-13, p.133). The guard note comment also notes that Lopynford occurs from the reign of Richard II right through to Henry V, so that such a narrow date in not really acceptable on such flimsy evidence.
