SC 8/228/11368
Date
[c. 1364]
Description
Petitioners
John de Loudham, brother and heir of Robert de Loudham.
Name(s)
de Loudham, John
Addressees
King
Nature of request
The petitioner seeks recovery of the ferry from St Olaves in Herringfleet to Haddiscoe. He states that John atte Frere was seised of the ferry, and his ancestors before him from time without memory. John granted the ferry to Robert de Loudham, knight, and his heirs. From Robert, who died without heirs, the ferry descended to Roger, who died seised; the ferry then descended to Roger de Loudham, knight, who died seised; then to Roger who also died without heirs; then to Robert who died without heirs; then to the petitioner, who remained seised until the king removed him and took the ferry into his hands through Middleton the escheator, and granted the same to Chirbury to hold for his life. After Chirbury's death the king granted the ferry by charter to Felbrigg for his life. He seeks an inquiry before the chancellor.
Nature of endorsement
Let the petition be sent into Chancery, and let the chancellor call the parties and those who are to be called for the king, and he should hear the arguments and do justice.

Note
This is an earlier stage of the process found in SC 8/58/2864, which dates from the reign of Richard II; this petition must have been made some time late in the reign of Edward III. It is seems likely that the petition dates closely to an otherwise stray writ relating to the same matter found in this file, and by which Felbrigge is warned to be before the council and dating to 14 February 1364 (38 Edw. III).
