Full description and record details

SC 8/227/11305
Date
[1371]
Description
Petitioners
John de Schipedham (Shipdham), clerk.
Name(s)
de Schipedham (Shipdham), John
Addressees
King.
Occupation
clerk
Nature of request
Schipedham requests that he be granted the prebend of Balscot in the cathedral church of Kilkenny which is vacant be Balscot's consecration as bishop of Ossory, the collation pertaining to the king because of the temporalities after the death of Tatenhale.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Kilkenny, [County Kilkenny], Ireland
Ossory diocese, [Ireland].
People mentioned
Alexander de Balscote (Balscot), Bishop of Ossory
John de Totenhale (Tatenhale), late Bishop of Ossory.
Note
The petition must date to the period between the provision of Balscot as bishop of Ossory in February 1371 and the delivery of the temporalities in May of that year as the petition makes mention of the bishop's consecration, but that the temporalities remained in the king's hand. On this basis the response on the face of the petition stating that the request was granted by the king on 29 April indicates the petition is of April 1371, the petition perhaps being presented to the parliament held at Westminster in late February 1371 if it is a parliamentary petition. This is confirmed by the enrolment in the patent rolls (CPR 1370-4, p.72).
