Reference
SC 8/225/11248
Date
[1382-1386]
Description
Petitioners
Merchants of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The merchants request that they can ship 3,000 sacks of wool, hides, fleeces and other merchandises appurtenant to the staple to wherever they wish, paying the customs decided by the council and having regard for their great costs in the repair of the town, and their losses by land and sea. They have already had a grant for 1,000 sacks because the wool in the area is so poor and the journey to Calais so long and dangerous, and this grant increased the customs.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Newcastle upon Tyne, [Northumberland]
Calais, [France].
Note
The petition dates to 1382-1386 as the last batch of the earlier license for the export of 1,000 sacks was made in March 1382, and an embargo on further exports was imposed on 16 July 1386 (CCR 1381-5, p.47; CCR 1385-9, p.255).
