Note
Dated on the guard to 1302 or 1306, with a suggestion that it was formerly enclosed in SC 8/223/11138. It may well have been enclosed in that petition, or presented in its support, although that petition does not explicitly state that a copy was attached, and the stitch holes do not match. Alternatively, confirmation of this charter was granted on 7 February 1307, possibly in response to a petition with which this may have been enclosed; however, the transcript given in the charter roll calendar does not appear to have been made from this copy, as the month in the dating clause, omitted here, is given as November in the calendar. Also, the endorsement, evidently responding to the petition to which the charter was attached, appears to suggest a dispute rather than a simple confirmation. The original charter is also published in Dugdale's 'Monasticon Anglicanum' (vol. V, p.594), but the transcription is poor. Many of the places named in the charter are noted as 'lost' by the English Place Names Society volumes for Cumberland.
