chaplain
Nature of request
Thomas de Sudbury, prebendary of the prebend of Major Pars Altaris in the cathedral church of Salisbury, requests that he be granted letters of presentment to the prebendary of Brightling in the collegiate church of Hastings in Chichester diocese, as he has agreed to exchange prebends with John de Sudbury, if the king agrees.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Salisbury, [Wiltshire]
Brightling, [Sussex]
Hastings, [Sussex]
Chichester diocese.
People mentioned
John de Sudbury, clerk.
Note
John de Sudbury was presented to a prebend in Hastings in September 1380 and the officials were ordered to grant him possession in January 1381, all on the resignation of the petitioner. Whether this prebend is that of Brightling named in the petition is unclear, but it seems likely that it is. The petitioner is clearly requesting to be appointed to this post rather than relinquish it, and thus this petition probably dates to another, slightly later point in these events, with Thomas seemingly seeking to be restored to his original prebend.
