Description
Petitioners
Ralph de Aderley (Adderley), John Colle, chaplain, and William de Normanton.
Name(s)
de Aderley (Adderley); Colle; de Normanton, Ralph; John; William
Addressees
King.
Occupation
chaplain
Nature of request
The petitioners request that the chirographer be ordered to engross a recognisance relating to their case against the Stanhopes over lands in various counties. The chirographer has refused to do so due to inconsistencies over the name of the justice, who is named in one document as Roger de Meres and in another as Roger de Kirketon.
Nature of endorsement
Issue a writ to the justices of the common bench concerning this matter, and if it is found that the said Roger delivered the documents mentioned in this petition into the common bench, then they should engross the fines as the petition mentions, notwithstanding that he is named Roger de Meres in the writ of dedimus potestatem.
Places mentioned

Nottinghamshire
Derbyshire
Staffordshire
Leicestershire.
People mentioned
John Stanhope
Elizabeth [Stanhope], wife of John Stanhope
Roger de Kirkton (Kirketon, Kirton), justice, alias Roger de Meres.
Note
Dated on the guard to c. 1372, with reference to patent roll entries relating to the career of Meres (Kirketon), and to Foss's 'Judges of England'. Foss states (vol. III, pp.463-5, vol. IV, pp.63-4) that Meres and Kirketon are probably the same man, and this petition would seem to confirm this. Since there is no indication that the judge was dead, the petition has therefore been dated to some point between his appointment to the common bench in November 1371 and his death in 9 Richard II.
