Nature of request
John James requests that he be restored to his possession of the manor of Freshwater on the Isle of Wight. He states that he leased the manor from Isabella, daughter of Edward III, at a farm of £30, which was later reduced to £20 by letters of Enguerrand de Coucy, Earl of Bedford, the husband of Isabella, and he continued in his tenure until the manor (together with his goods, crops and other possessions) was lately seized into the king's hands due to the Earl's adherence to the king's French enemies.
Nature of endorsement
Find surety in chancery to answer the king at the quindene of Michaelmas next, and the matter will be judged by the council with the advice of the justices and sergeants, and, having found surety, have a writ to the steward allowing the petitioner to have possession of the manor until the said quindene.[Sureties for] John James: Walter Eweyn of London, Nicholas Hotot of Hertfordshire, John Newport of Hampshire.
