Reference
SC 8/223/11132
Date
[1377]
Description
Petitioners
John of Gaunt, King of Castile and Duke of Lancaster.
Name(s)
Gaunt, King of Castile and Duke of Lancaster, John
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
John of Gaunt states that, whereas he agreed with Edward III to receive various castles, lordships and honours across England in exchange for the Earldom of Richmond, many of these estates are ruinous and wasted. He therefore requests that he either be restored to his estate in the earldom, or the lands are granted to him on revised terms.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the lords of parliament, if it pleases the king, that the estate be confirmed to the King of Castile and his heirs, holding all the property contained in the exchange on the same terms as he held the earldom, as agreed by both councils, and should the earldom again come into the hands of the king or his heirs, then the king may enter the earldom without contradiction of the king of Castile or his heirs, notwithstanding the conditions of the exchange. After the feast of St Clement in the present parliament an agreement was made between the two kings with the agreement of the two councils and the lords of parliament, and there came to parliament John de Fordham, Keeper of the Privy Seal, and Richard le Scrope, Steward of the Household, who sealed an agreement with the great seal and delivered it to the King of Castile, placing a copy in the treasury.
Places mentioned
Richmond, [North Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Edward III, King of England
John de Fordham, Keeper of the Privy Seal
Richard le Scrope, Steward of the Household.
Note
Dated on the guard to? 1377, with reference to a confirmation of the exchange issued in that year, and various details in the petition would seem to confirm this. Parliament was sitting on the feast of St Clement (23 November) of that year, while Fordham was Keeper of the Privy Seal from June 1377 to December 1381, and Scrope was Steward of the Household from August 1377 to May 1378.
