Description
Petitioners
Commons.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The commons state that it is the custom that, if any person falls to their death into the sea from a ship, that ship is forfeited to the king or any other lord of a franchise as a deodand. They claim that this is to the damage of many mariners and to the king's navy, and ask that such forfeitures be discontinued.
Nature of endorsement
[on face] No such deodands should be adjudged in the sea, but in fresh water the king should have his grace if he pleases.
Note
A version of this petition appears on the parliament roll for the Hilary parliament of 1377. The editors of PROME suggest that the present petition may be a copy of that enrolment, rather than the original from which the enrolment was made.
