Description
Petitioners
John Stacy, king's clerk.
Name(s)
Stacy, John
Addressees
King.
Occupation
king's clerk
Nature of request
John Stacy states that, whereas the king has lately appointed him to the prebend of Leighton Buzzard, Kyrkestede has since claimed that he was appointed to this prebend by the pope, and petitioned the king for Stacy to appear to show his right. He requests that the king order the chancellor to summon Kyrkestede before him to hear the matter and make judgment.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Leighton Buzzard, [Bedfordshire]
Lincoln, [Lincolnshire].
People mentioned
Bishop of Lincoln
Chapter of Lincoln
William Kyrkestede (Kirkstead)
[Urban VI], pope.
Note
Stacy was appointed as prebendary on 30 October 1387, and an order protecting his possession was issued on 6 December 1387. A writ to Kirkstede to show his title was issued on 13 December 1387 (SC 8/223/11122), while a writ to the sheriff of Bedfordshire to summon Stacy was issued on 18 June 1388 (SC 8/223/11121). This petition clearly dates to some point in this period, but the chronology is not clear, although it seems most likely that this is the petition which prompted the order to Kyrkestede of 13 December (SC 8/223/11122).
