Nature of request
Matthew de Gourney, provost of Entre-Deux-Mers, states that he bought this provostry at great cost with all its appurtenances, including certain 'auberges' (rights of lodging and provisioning) levied of the people by the rulers of Guyenne from time out of mind. However, when John of Gaunt last came to the region, the people complained that they ought not to pay such charges, but, after initially suspending collection, the Duke held an investigation and found that the crown and the petitioner were entitled to these rights, and ordered that they be collected again. Nevertheless, the king has granted letters to the people exempting them from these payments, contrary to the judgment of Gaunt and to the great damage of the crown and the petitioner, and he therefore requests that the king revoke these letters and restore him to possession of the payments, ordering the people to pay the sums due and all outstanding arrears.
