Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/222/11053
Date
[c. 1370-c. 1400]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and Convent of Bury St Edmunds.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The abbot and convent of Bury St Edmunds request that the charge of 1200 marks due from them at the time of each vacancy in the abbacy in return for retaining the temporalities of their house, as agreed with Edward I, be replaced by an annual charge, as various losses have meant that they can no longer raise such a sum.
Nature of endorsement
[on dorse] Bury.
Places mentioned
Bury St Edmunds, [Suffolk].
People mentioned
Edward I, King of England.
Note
Dated on the guard to c. 1378, with reference to CCR 1377-81, pp.172-3, an order to the escheator to allow the prior to retain the temporalities according to the earlier agreement. However, this reference appears to have no direct connection with this petition, although a vacancy may have prompted its submission. The handwriting would appear to date to the latter part of the fourteenth century, and vacancies occurred in both 1379 and 1390.
