Nature of request
Memorandum recounting the presentation to the parliament which opened at Westminster on 17 September 1397 (and subsequently adjourned to Shrewsbury) of a petition by John Fraunceys, former sheriff of London. A transcript of the text and response of the petition (SC 8/221/11035) is given, followed by the findings of the resultant enquiry. This found that, as claimed by Fraunceys, Preston was not committed to the keeping of the sheriffs, but was indeed sent to the Fleet prison, where he remained in the custody of Saperton until he escaped, although he was subsequently recaptured. Fraunceys is to be discharged from all responsibility, and these findings added to the roll.

Note
Given that the introduction of this document refers to the adjournment and closure of the parliament which opened at Westminster on 17 September 1397, it presumably dates to some point shortly after its dissolution on 31 January 1398. The second half of the text is probably a Latin translation of the record of the enquiry at SC 8/221/11047.
