Description
Petitioners
Thomas Jewe and John de Mouthe.
Name(s)
Jewe; de Mouthe, Thomas; John
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Thomas Jewe and John de Mouthe request that the king issue letters to the Duke of Lancaster and the Chancellor ordering that Stepelton or another neutral person be appointed as sheriff of Shropshire, and that letters appointing Whytton to the post be repealed. They state that Isolde, widow of John de More, has made a false appeal against them and others regarding the death of her husband, and Jewe has been imprisoned for this for over a year. Whytton is part of their party, and has been appointed despite not having sufficient property as demanded by the statute, and was part of a force of 1000 men who have disseised Mouthe of his manors in Shropshire, for which they have not been fined.
Nature of endorsement

Shene (Richmond), [Surrey].
People mentioned
Isolde [de More], widow of John de More
John de More
Thomas de Whytton
John de Stepelton (Stapleton)
[John of Gaunt], Duke of Lancaster.
Note
Dated on the guard to c. 1390-1, with reference to an order to the justices relating to Isolde de More's appeal, dated 3 June 1391. However Whytton, appointed as sheriff of Shropshire on 7 November 1390, was replaced by Stepelton on 18 December 1390, strongly suggesting that the petition was presented between those two dates and was successful.
