Description
Petitioners
John Rose (Ros, Roos), king's esquire.
Name(s)
Rose (Ros, Roos), John
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
[This petition is damaged.]John Rose requests a life exemption from being appointed to royal office against his will. He also asks that the clerk of the hanaper be ordered to deliver to him certain letters patent, regarding lands formerly held by Hanchech which have been granted to him, and regarding his wages from the king's household.
Nature of endorsement
[on face] This is granted by the king.
People mentioned
Clerk of the Hanaper
John Hanchech (Hanchache).
Note
On 20 October 1383, Rose (or Roos) was granted lands in Cambridgeshire formerly held by Hanchache, following the latter's execution after his participation in the Peasants' Revolt. These are presumably the lands referred to here, and thus the petition probably dates to some point after that grant. The petition is on paper, damaged in places and written in a very rough hand with numerous insertions and deletions, suggesting that it may be a draft rather than the finished request.
