SC 8/221/11014B
Date
[c. 1399]
Description
Petitioners
? No Petitioner named
Nature of request
Damaged writ of Henry [IV] to the sheriffs of York, recounting that Adam Somondour of Osbaldwick, a bastard, acquired two cottages [outside Monk Bar in the suburbs of the city of York,] and a further cottage on Walmgate within the city, held of the king in chief, and that he died without heirs, by which the property was taken into the king's hands and granted to Lincoln. However, Thomas Somondour has since claimed that he is the rightful heir of Adam, the son of Adam and his wife Maud. The sheriffs are ordered to summon Lincoln before the king in chancery on the octave of Martinmas next to show his title.
Nature of endorsement
For the reason that it was assigned at another time by petition [...] Richard II, lately king of England made [...] filacer of the chancellor of the same former king [...].The response of Thomas Doncastre and John Bernardcastell, sheriffs of the city of York.John Lincoln was summoned to appear to show his writ at the given day according to the form of this writ by Robert Bird and Thomas Bald.

Note
The dating clause of the writ is now almost entirely lost (only the day, the 24th survives), but this writ would seem to be a direct response to the petition at SC 8/221/1014A. Although this writ was issued under Henry IV, that petition was clearly intended for Richard II, thus suggesting that the petition dates from shortly before Richard's deposition, and the writ to shortly afterwards.
